Accommodation & Student Assistance Program

Information & Policies

Basic Information

The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor does not discriminate on the basis of handicap in the  recruitment and admission of students, the recruitment and employment of faculty and staff, and the operation of any of its programs and activities as specified by federal laws and regulations. The UMHB Counseling and Testing Center is available to assist students with disability-related issues including reasonable accommodation under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.

Reasonable accommodations can be arranged enabling students with qualified disabilities to participate in and benefit from all university educational programs and activities.

The university representative responsible for establishing official documentation of student disabilities and facilitating corresponding accommodation requests is the Director of Counseling and Testing. Students desiring accommodations for a disabling condition are responsible for providing acceptable documentation to this individual. Acceptable documentation must have been produced within the last three years by a licensed professional qualified to make the respective diagnosis. Any documentation submitted to the University for consideration must be provided in a timely manner prior to the period of stated need.

Services

Services will be evaluated and arranged on a case-by-case basis. Upon receiving all required official documentation and completing an initial student interview, the Director of Counseling and Testing will state in writing those specified services and accommodations that the university is able to provide.

Eligibility

Students with disabilities must meet UMHB admissions requirements. Following acceptance of admission, students seeking services are encouraged to contact the UMHB Counseling and Testing Center four weeks prior to the  semester in which the student desires to attend University classes/activities.

Application Process

Students desiring disability services must:

  •  Apply and be accepted to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
  •  Provide official documentation to the Director of Counseling and Testing. Acceptable documentation must have been produced by a licensed professional qualified to diagnose the condition(s), (this may include a licensed psychiatrist, psychologist, physician, professional counselor, social worker, educational psychologist or equivalent approved by the university.
  •  Schedule an initial interview with the Director of Counseling and Testing to discuss needs and register for services.
  • Attend follow-up interviews to review letter of accommodation stating provision of services.

Accommodations

UMHB will provide effective, reasonable accommodation(s) so long as the accommodation(s) do not pose an undue hardship on the university or cause the university to substantially alter its academic programs.

Accommodation(s) may be provided once all application requirements are fulfilled. When these requirements have been met, the Counseling and Testing Center will provide a Letter of Accommodation describing those accommodations that the university is willing to offer the student. Upon completion, the student and the Director of  Counseling and Testing will jointly review the letter of accommodation. Once the accommodations have been approved, the student will be referred to the appropriate faculty/staff offices for the provision of services that are considered effective and reasonable.

UMHB Testing Center Guidelines

Student Responsibilities

Students using the Testing Center and who are under ADA accommodations must:

  •  Contact the Testing Center to schedule a testing room and time.
  •  Contact the professor and ask them to send the exam to the Testing Center.
  •  Follow testing guidelines from your professor and Testing Center staff.

Appointments should be made to take tests in advance because testing rooms are often  full. If rooms do end up full, it is the students responsibility to schedule a time with the professor. The Testing Center is not responsible for giving tests to students who have not made appointments in advance. In such cases, tests may be sent back to the professor.

Students using the Testing Center to proctor a correspondence exam are to follow the guidelines for testing at the Independent Study Institution of their choosing. The Testing Center is not responsible for requesting exams, nor does it contact students when exams arrive. Graduating seniors should allocate extra time for scores to be sent.
